The Social Security Administration releases monthly Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payment statistics by state, providing several key figures, including total check payments and annual savings to Americans if all checks were converted to direct deposit.

The U.S. Department of the Treasury issues more than 130 million checks each year. This includes Social Security, SSI, OPM and VA checks.

More than 62 million people receive Social Security and/or SSI payments each month; 16 percent of those payments are by check.

More than 54 million people receive Social Security payments each month; 13 percent of the payments are by check.

More than 8 million people receive SSI payments each month; 34 percent of the payments are by check.

About 4 million people who receive Social Security and SSI checks don’t have a bank or credit union account.1

Currently, there are about 78 million baby boomers in the country. Baby boomers include those born between 1946 and 1964.4

Ninety-five percent of Direct Express® cardholders surveyed said they were satisfied with the card; 86 percent of surveyed cardholders said they would recommend the card to a friend or family member.5
