October 2006
New York Goes Direct during Crime Prevention Month
More than 120 senior citizens gathered in a Bronx senior center in October to hear about Go Direct from the U.S. Department of the Treasury, the New York City Comptroller's Office, the New York City Police Department and the National Crime Prevention Council. The Crime Prevention Month-themed event was aimed at raising awareness about the safety aspects of direct deposit, and motivating New Yorkers to sign up for direct deposit of their Social Security checks.
Seniors learned how direct depositing their Social Security checks can protect them against financial crimes, including check fraud and identity theft. Last year alone, about 65,000 Treasury-issued checks were forged – a risk that is eliminated by direct deposit.
Local media coverage of the event includes NY1's New York Tonight, News 12 – The Bronx and Univision Channel 41. Information about the event was posted on numerous news Web sites, including Yahoo! Finance, Forbes, NY1, The Post Standard (Syracuse, NY), Investors Business Daily and Banker & Tradesman Online.
