Go Direct marks one millionth direct
deposit milestone

The Go Direct campaign is delighted to announce that one million – and counting – seniors and other federal benefit check recipients have now switched to direct deposit! The milestone, achieved after two years of campaign activity and help from partner organizations, represents a giant step forward in protecting America's federal beneficiaries from fraud and identity theft, and giving them greater control over their money.

“More than just a number, one million direct deposit conversions are a sign that our Go Direct message is taking hold and making a positive difference in the lives of people who rely on Social Security,” said Kenneth R. Papaj, Commissioner of Treasury's Financial Management Service. “We are especially grateful for the help and dedication of our more than 1,000 partners – it's their commitment to the campaign that has helped make this impressive achievement possible.”

Partner participation hits high point

The Go Direct campaign reached more than one milestone this spring. In May, Go Direct signed on its 1,000th partner – Self-Help Credit Union based in North Carolina. With more than 1,000 partner organizations working to get the message out about the safety, convenience and ease of direct deposit, Go Direct truly has a presence throughout the country. The work of our partners makes all the difference in helping people sign up for direct deposit. Thank you, partners!

If you would like information on how to sign up your organization to be a Go Direct partner – or if you're an existing partner and would like additional materials and information – please call (952) 346-6055 or email GoDirect@webershandwick.com.

Go Direct partners promote disaster preparedness

Seniors and those with disabilities can be especially vulnerable when disaster strikes. Whether it's a hurricane, tornado or other type of natural or man-made disaster, using direct deposit for your federal benefits ensures your money will be in your account on payment day. This message can be easily incorporated into any organization's disaster preparedness materials and programs.

Here's a look at what two of our partners have done to promote
Go Direct:

  • Operation HOPE, Inc., a leading provider of economic tools and services, is distributing Go Direct flyers in the organization's Mississippi and Louisiana offices, just in time for the start of hurricane season.
  • The Ready campaign, designed to educate Americans to prepare for and respond to emergencies, included the Go Direct toll-free helpline and a link to the Go Direct sign-up page on its Web site, Ready.gov.

If your organization would like to promote Go Direct as part of your disaster preparedness program, contact your local campaign representative or call (952) 346-6055 to speak to a campaign representative. Click here to access the Disaster Preparedness tool kit.

In the Media

As the hurricane season gets underway, the Go Direct campaign is reaching out to the media to promote direct deposit as the safer, more reliable method of payment for seniors and other federal beneficiaries who receive their payment by paper check. To date, media coverage about
Go Direct and hurricane preparedness has reached an audience of more than 3.8 million people in hurricane-prone states:

  • On May 26, a letter to the editor from United States Treasurer Anna Cabral ran in the print and online versions of the St. Petersburg Times. (circ. 1,451,269)
  • More than 12 radio stations have interviewed Alvina McHale, director of legislative and public affairs for the Treasury's Financial Management Service.
  • More than 20 stories have aired on network television stations.
  • Local newspapers in Florida, Georgia, Mississippi and Texas have run a Go Direct article.
  • The Go Direct hurricane PSA is airing on more than 30 radio stations.
