Go Direct partners host financial literacy events

In recognition of Financial Literacy Month in April, organizations across the country are hosting dozens of Go Direct financial literacy events to help people who receive Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments get more control over their money. Click here to locate a Go Direct event in a city near you.

It's not too late to incorporate Go Direct into your financial literacy efforts during Financial Literacy Month! Click here to access the Financial Literacy tool kit, which contains all of the information you'll need to promote the benefits of direct deposit during April, and year-round.

If your organization is interested in hosting a Go Direct financial literacy presentation or planning a financial literacy event with another Go Direct partner, contact your local campaign representative or call (952) 346-6055.

Direct Deposit and Disaster Preparedness

When disaster strikes -- whether it's a hurricane, tornado or other catastrophe -- seniors and people with disabilities can be especially vulnerable. Switching to direct deposit is a simple way for people to protect themselves before disaster hits.

For those who depend on the mail for their Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits, a difficult situation can become worse if they are evacuated or lose mail service. With direct deposit, the money goes straight into a person's account on payment day and is accessible from virtually anywhere. These messages are particularly fitting during Hurricane Preparedness Week (May 20-26) and National Safety Month in June.

Go Direct makes it easy for partners to promote the safety and ease of direct deposit. It's as simple as posting a disaster preparedness Web banner on your Web site or including information about Go Direct in your disaster preparedness materials and resources. To learn more about the Go Direct disaster preparedness program click here, contact your Go Direct representative or call (952)-346-6055.

In the Media

Besides using Go Direct materials, presentations and newsletter articles to promote the benefits of direct deposit, have you considered submitting a letter to the editor of your local newspaper? It's an easy way to share information about direct deposit with people who receive federal benefits in your community.

Here's a look at what two of our partners have done:

    • Police Officer Tammy Snider, president of the North Texas Crime Prevention Association of Plano, Texas, wrote a letter to the editor of The Dallas Morning News, which ran March 16 in the print and online versions of the newspaper, reaching an audience of more than 1.6 million people. The letter pointed to results from the recent U.S. Treasury Go Direct survey and petitioned Texas residents who receive Social Security and SSI to switch to the safer, easier option of direct deposit.
    • Paul Bridgewater, president of the Detroit Area Agency on Aging, submitted a letter to the editor of the Michigan Chronicle, which ran in the print version of the newspaper on March 6. The letter, which referenced results from the U.S. Treasury Go Direct survey, informed people who receive Social Security and SSI payments about the benefits of direct deposit.

If you are interested in submitting a letter to the editor of your local newspaper, contact your local campaign representative or call (952) 346-6055.
