About Countdown to Retirement
America’s oldest boomers are nearing retirement, and many
are just a year away from being eligible to collect Social Security.
The goal of Countdown to Retirement is to inform baby boomers about
the benefits of direct deposit for Social Security. Direct deposit
is so much safer and easier than other payment methods – yet
according to a new national poll, one in
four baby boomers still get paid with old-fashioned
paper checks. If that trend continues into retirement, too many baby
boomers will be missing out on the benefits of direct deposit.
What’s so great about direct deposit for Social Security?
- Safer. Direct deposit eliminates the risk of stolen checks and forgeries, and
greatly reduces the risk of identity theft. Whenever there’s a problem with a Social Security payment, nine times out of 10 it’s with a paper check, not a direct deposit payment.
- Easier. Transportation or health problems may keep you from leaving the house
to cash or deposit a check. With direct deposit, your payment is in your account when you need
it.
- More Control. Emergencies, vacations and natural disasters can take you away
from home unexpectedly for days or weeks. With direct deposit, you can access your money from
virtually anywhere, at any time.
Take the Countdown to Retirement Quiz to see how your attitudes about retirement and direct deposit measure
up against other baby boomers’ views. Then make the pledge to choose direct deposit when you sign up to
collect Social Security!
Countdown to Retirement is an initiative of Go Direct, a campaign sponsored by the
U.S. Department of the Treasury and the Federal Reserve Banks to encourage people who are already collecting
Social Security by paper check to switch to direct deposit.
Direct deposit is the safest, easiest way to get your federal benefits!
